How to get a job: my story
A few years ago, I needed a job. So I went to a car dealership and asked to speak with the hiring manager. I knew my chances of getting hired were higher if I applied in person rather than online. The hiring manager interviewed me and offered me a job.
You can do this, too. You can visit a business you are interested in, ask to speak with the hiring manager, express your interest in a job, inquire about job opportunities, and request an interview.
If the hiring manager sees that you have a can-do positive attitude and a professional appearance, your chances of being offered a job increase.
When you meet the hiring manager, smile, make eye contact, and shake hands. During the interview, provide accurate and confident answers to questions.
If you are rejected, don’t let it bother you. Keep looking for an opportunity.
Success on the job
The following steps will help you become a star employee:
- Keep your appearance neat and tidy, and your clothing appropriate for the job, clean, and pressed.
- Arrive before your start time.
- Look people in the eye, smile, and say good morning.
- Focus on your job; be quick to offer assistance.
- Own your job: learn what your role requires and do it excellently with a good attitude.
- Notice what your coworkers do well.
- Notice problems and find solutions. After work, write down the problems and solutions in a notebook.
- Learn everything you can about the business.
If you consistently do these things, you will stand out. You might even get a promotion. At the very least, you will have the satisfaction of a job well done, and you will become someone others enjoy working with.
